‘Great Gulls’ is a lovely coastal quilt featuring flying gulls and a seaside theme. The quilt is layer cake friendly! A layer cake is a fabric bundle containing 42 x 10" squares of fabric, and the top of this quilt can be made from a single layer cake.

I have made ‘Great Gulls’ in several of my seaside themed fabric lines for Moda, and the pattern shows a few layouts to give you an idea of possibilities. My fabrics often include indigo, mid blue, sand and cream fabrics but you can easily choose your own. Contrast is the key, so simply choose 25 dark squares and 17 pale squares in your favourite colours.

Printed in full colour the pattern includes detailed layout diagrams, fabric requirements and cutting lists. The pattern guides you through cutting your fabric, preparing and piecing the quilt background, adding your appliqué gulls, free-motion stitching and includes notes on preparing the quilt backing, wadding, layering up and binding.

A full-size template means marking out your appliqué gulls is a breeze and lots of close-up photographs to demonstrate how using Janet’s free-machine drawing technique brings your fusible appliqué birds to life. The versatile template can also be used for other appliqué, embroidery and paper craft projects.

The techniques for this project are simple to learn, making it suitable for all experience levels.
