Creating a Zip Purse with Maiyah, Aged 6

Kerrie from Living in Loveliness, and her niece Maiyah show us how to create a simple zip purse.

What you will need

Fabric Requirements (slightly over estimated)

  • Exterior Fabric: 1"x10"x18"

  • Lining: 1"x10"x18"

You will also need

  • 1x Frixon Pen

  • 1x 6" zipper

  • Iron/Ironing board

  • Thread

  • Zipper foot

  • Sewing machine

Cutting Guide

  • Exterior

A: Cut 2x 7.5"x4"

  • Lining

B: Cut 2x 7.5"x4"

Steps

1) Place one Exterior (A) pieces pattern facing you, open your zipper half way and lie your zipper along the top raw edge (you should see the back of your zipper).

2) Place one of the Interior (B) pieces pattern facing the zipper (you should see the back side of the fabric facing you). Pin into place. Change to a zipper foot.

3) Using the zipper foot, place the purse onto the sewing machine and drop the foot. Make sure the zipper foot is positioned as shown in the picture. Sew along the raw edge, stopping when you are close to your zipper. Leaving your needle inserted, raise your sewing foot and close the zipper. Sew to the end of the purse and then remove from the sewing machine.

4) Fold back the Exterior and Interior fabrics to expose the zipper and press flat. Pin into place and open the zipper half way.

5) Return the purse to the sewing machine and line up your zipper as shown. Sew along the zipper, until you are close to your zipper. Leave your needle inserted and raise the sewing foot. Close the zipper, lower the foot, and then sew to the end of the purse.

6) With the second Exterior piece (A) pattern facing you, align the zipper on top and then place the Lining (B) on top aligning the raw edges and pin into place. Now repeat steps 4 and 5.

7) Close the zip half way and match the two Exterior pieces and the two Lining pieces.

8) Mark a 3” turning gap along the longest Lining raw edge.

9) Starting at the left pen mark, sew all the way round the purse excluding the turning gap. Ensuring you reverse stitch at the start and stop pen marks.

10) Clip the corners, pull the purse right side out.

11) Push the raw edges of the turning gap inside the lining and pin into place. Slip stitch the turning gap.

12) Press to finish.
